Wonderful day yesterday with Tom & Charlie joining us aboard GOOD DAY.
We set up a Fly / Conventional combo so Tom could try & catch Billfish or Dorado on the Fly whilst Charlie had a couple of ‘long’ baits out in the spread on conventional gear.
The fishing proved slow, we didn’t have a sniff for the first couple of hours until all hell broke loose when we raised 3 Sailfish & a Marlin at the same time! Two of the fish teased but would not eat the Fly. Charlie caught 1 of the Sailfish on conventional gear. We pushed out to 33 miles. It looked good with dolphins, birds & a bit of bait showing but it was dreadfully slow.
In the last hour we raised a Sailfish but again it was not aggressive for the Fly & faded off quickly. Then right on 4pm just as we were pulling the final teasers out of the water to head home, we raised a very obliging Sailfish which piled on Tom’s Fly the moment it hit the water, fish on!
A hectic 25 minutes ensued. Tom could not quite believe he was hooked up when seconds before he almost cut his fly off as we were packing up. Then the Sailfish jumped around 10 times in succession & almost came in the boat! It then turned suddenly, running right underneath us and annoyingly getting Tom’s brand new fly line wrapped around the propellor, ouch! We thought the fish was gone. After some quick thinking by Capt Manuel, he grabbed a mask & jumped overboard to try and free the line, we realized the fish was still on! There were just too many wraps to free easily so we ended up cutting the fly line, quickly retying it, amazingly the fish was still hooked & Tom battled it for another 20 odd minutes as it did its best to spool Tom of his backing several times.
It was by no means a textbook Billfish on the Fly capture but it was wild & very good fun! We finally got the fish boatside for some quick photos before release. It had been a slow old day but all that was quickly forgotten. We enjoyed some great conversation, stunning weather throughout the day and then what a way to finish up! By my count Tom has now caught somewhere around 10 Sailfish on the Fly fishing aboard GOOD DAY with Manuel & I and our buddy Capt Randy on Swordfish.
It’s always an adventure out there!
