Just an amazing day in the books yesterday as we held the 4th annual Dorado Derby here at Marina Pez Vela where an incredible 56 boats battled it out to see who would be crowned this years champion.
Fun, one day tournaments with a low entry cost are definitely working well here with awards for not only the overall champions but also top lady, top junior, top first time angler plus a few other fun lottery type jackpots such as fish closest to 20lbs & 30lbs. These events are going from strength to strength each year and just amazing to be a part of the progress & success.
Our dear friends Team #peytonspirates joined us once again for the event and we were proud to hoist the Pirate flag once again aboard GOOD DAY. Cory, Dan, Nate, Jerry & chief Pirate Peyton was our Team and we not only had a blast creating more lifelong memories, but we caught plenty of fish too. We were thinking of our good buddy George who is back in the states and couldn’t be with us & there may have been 1-2 beer toasts so we didn’t forget him!
With not much rain over the past week, there was very little debris out there and from 8-15 miles where we would normally find some floating debris, there was zero. So we changed plans and pushed out deep, fishing out to 36 miles and spending our time in 4 main areas. We fished several small current breaks, catching 4 Dorados in the 18-20lb range by lunchtime and having 2 shots at Sailfish that we did not want to catch & waste time. It was not until the last 90 minutes when having a final run to search for some action, that we encountered a tree trunk floating with the mother load of Dorado around it. This was exactly what we were looking for & in just over an hour of frantic fishing we increased the tally to 15 Dorados, everyone had a great time with lots of bulls in the 15-20lb range but we could just not find the big boy that we needed.
Upon heading back to the scales under a stunning sunset the dock chatter was the same, plenty of fish but not many big ones. Apart from Team Offensive, who found a 65 pounder which literally clean sweeped most of the prize money & jackpots taking home more than US26,000!!! That is exactly what this tournament is about, have a ton of fun with good friends & try and find that one big fish.
