Just an epic day aboard GOOD DAY a few days back with Brad from Texas & Kenton from Virginia.
We went all out to catch fish on the Fly & the day got off to an absolute flyer when we raised a Sailfish in the first 5 minutes of the day, it teased perfectly, Kenton got the perfect cast in and the Sailfish ate the Fly….Fish on!!
All had gone great but then the line fell loose as the fish threw the hook & it was gone.
Now talk about a good warm up for a days fishing!! The adrenaline was pumping!!
It wasn’t 15 minutes before Capt. Manuel spotted some Tuna & the guys got their 10 wt Fly outfits ready. We had a blast on the Tuna catching 3 in total, 2 of them on the Fly. The surface explosions as the Tuna ate the Fly off the top were just incredible & there is nothing like the sound of a fly reel as a Tuna does it’s best to empty it!
We left the Tuna biting & pushed out deeper to look for Billfish & Dorado.
No sooner had we set the Teasers, did we have a Dorado crash them. An airborne Dorado made jump after jump as it locked onto the teaser missile like, i pulled the teaser out of the water as fast as I could as Brad cast his fly in return. Boom, the Dorado ate the Fly in a flash and made a series of blistering runs & jumps and put up a great fight. To say Brad was over the moon would be an understatement. His 2nd ever Dorado on Fly and first for many years. The day was coming together nicely.
We had some good Dorado action on Bait but could not get any more to tease for the Fly as we continued our quest for a Billfish on the Fly.
Just after 12pm we raised a Blue Marlin on the teaser. Brad was ready with the Fly Rod but after two quick swipes at the teaser, the fish faded off & wasn’t our one for the Fly unfortunately!
We pushed on, it was 1pm and a couple of hours still remained. The tell tail fin of a Marlin appeared behind the Squidnation teaser. I teased the fish towards the boat, Kenton made the perfect cast as Capt. Manuel slid GOOD DAY into neutral as the propellor wash faded. To watch a Marlin come towards the boat in crystal clear water with no disturbance from the propeller and then engulf a Fly is a sight to behold. The composure that Kenton maintained was insane. It was only his second day ever Saltwater Fishing & he had just hooked a Striped Marlin on Fly!
It was an incredible battle. Crazy runs, jumps, stripping tons of line off the Tibor Reels & 12 wt R.L. Winston Rod Company set up. To add to the excitement, the tip section of the rod broke towards the end of the fight, many Anglers would have lost their cool.
But not Kenton, composed to the very end, until we finally grabbed the leader and then the Bill of this great fish, a stunning striped Marlin that we estimated at 140lbs.
What a day!!!
