Trip Report - 4 nights, 3 days fishing - July 11th - 14th 2018
Local legend the 46 foot CARIBSEA has just returned from its latest multiday trip to the Offshore FADS & Seamounts 100 or so miles off the coast of Costa Rica. In recent years Marlin FAD Fishing in Costa Rica has quickly gained the reputation of being the Best Blue Marlin fishery on the planet. No other destination comes close to the sheer numbers of Blue Marlin raised and released and CARIBSEA'S recent trip was no exception. Bob & his buddies kicked off their Costa Rica Sportfishing adventure with a Full Day Roosterfish fishing trip aboard the 31' GOOD DAY. After a very slow morning, the bite turned on and the guys released 3 nice sized Roosterfish and the surprise of the day, a Milkfish of around 12-15lbs! These algae/filter feeders are not supposed to eat large fish baits but this guy was obviously hungry as he ate our midsized Lookdown livebait intended for a big Roosterfish! A very nice surprise! So the trip was already off to a great start but now it was time for the main event! The guys boarded the 46' CARIBSEA just before sunset to commence an overnight chug out to the Marlin FADS and Seamounts. First mate Tio (who missed his calling as a chef!) had a piping hot Beef Lasagne dinner waiting for the guys as they boarded and of course a few ice cold beers to wash it down.
After the overnight chug to the fishing grounds the guys were awake early ready for lines in at 5am the next morning. Day 1 got off to a Flyer with 9 Blue Marlin raised with 6 Marlin being released. What a start! Day 2 turned out to be similar with another 6 Blue released from 10 Marlin raised. Noticing some bird activity on the radar Capt Glen asked the guys if they were interested in fishing for Tuna which they agreed to so they ran a few miles over to the Tuna school. After putting two 80+ pound Yellow Fin Tuna on the deck, the guys agreed they needed to save their energy for the Marlin so they quit whilst they were ahead and headed back to the FAD to look for some more Marlin action.
After a good night's rest, as daylight broke on the 3rd and final day of the Marlin FAD trip, they picked up the sea anchor and as they started to head back to the FAD, they encountered a large floating net which was loaded with bait so they decided to give it a try. At the first attempt, they got a quadruple hook up on Blue Marlin!! They released 1 of the Marlin and 3 of them were lost. Then they caught a double Blue Marlin and then amazingly hooked up to another quadruple Marlin! 3 Marlin were lost and 1 released. With the bite being so hot, Captain Glen made the call to switch things up to just two teasers and two bonito pitch baits, it was pure Marlin mahem at its finest...only at the Marlin FADS Costa Rica!! Day 3 would end up being a day that the guys will never forgot with 15 Blue Marlin releases from more than 30 Marlin raised (honestly, they lost count!), just fantastic fishing!
In 3 days fishing the guys raised more than 50 Marlin, releasing 27 Blue Marlin...simply incredible numbers that most people could only dream of in a lifetime.
The stats for the trip:
Day 1 - July 12th - 6 for 9 on Blue Marlin
Day 2 - July 13th - 6 for 10 on Blue Marlin & two Big Tuna (80lbs)
Day 3 - July 14th - 15 for 30+ on Blue Marlin
May through November are the peak months for Blue Marlin FAD Fishing in Costa Rica and the 46' CARIBSEA is an excellent boat to take this trip on.
