We had a very special day Fly Fishing in Quepos Costa Rica this week as Fly Fishing legend Peter Gorinsky & ‘Charlie’ Carlos Chavarria joined us aboard GOOD DAY. Peter has lived in Costa Rica for more than 40 years and was one of the pioneers of Fly Fishing in the country. I enjoyed Peters tales of an untouched Costa Rican Sport Fishery immensely and the day passed by far too quickly. Peter & Charlie run a great business Fly Fish In Costa Rica & are specialists in Tarpon, Trout & Machaca Fishing but today was all about Billfish and Charlie was looking for his first ever ‘Billfish on the Fly’. Peter has caught many Billfish on Fly in years gone by including a 450lb Marlin on Fly in the Caribbean, back in the day.
The day got off to a great start as we raised 5 Sailfish in the first hour of the day, a double where we got one Sailfish to bite the Fly but we missed it, then another double 10 minutes later, both of which would not bite the Fly. We then raised a ‘hot’ Fish which teased perfectly and Charlie hooked right behind the boat, let the games begin! After a 20 minute fight with some amazing jumps and lots of line stripped we had Charlie’s first ever Sailfish on Fly boatside for a couple of photos before we released it. Mission accomplished!
After lunch we put some baits out to try and catch a Dorado for dinner and raised 3 more Sails, catching 1 of them on bait.
We agreed to go hunting Roosterfish on Fly during our next outing and looking forward to that already.
Another great day on the water Fly Fishing in Quepos Costa Rica!
