We had already caught Dorado on the Fly earlier in the day & when we got a radio call from Capt. Franklin of Big Eye (thanks buddy!) to say that there were Tuna 12 miles further out, we pulled the gear in and ran straight for them. Jesse was in charge of the video content for the day & spent most of the time up top with Capt. Manuel Gabuardi filming the Spinner Dolphins & trying to get some airborne Tuna footage as they bust the surface from time to time whilst in pursuit of Flying Fish. When you find ‘La Mancha’ here in Costa Rica, a huge school of Tuna, Spinner Dolphins & Baitfish, it is going to be any photographer or videographer’s Dream. Jesse was in his element.
Watching Micah’s face as he strip set into a Yellow Fin Tuna was just priceless, these things are like living freight trains & it instantly started to empty his reel at a velocity most Fly Anglers have never seen before. Only quality tackle will survive out here, Tibor or Hatch Fly Reels are fantastic for the job, these Tuna are about as unforgiving as it gets.
After the fun on the Fly we couldn’t resist to try a couple of Live Baits on heavier tackle. Micah immediately hooked into a beast, which pulled a crazy amount of line out before spitting the hook. I then caught a smaller, stunning fish probably in the 50lb range.
Just a perfect day on the water with great guys from
Backwater Fly Fishing
, Jesse Males & Micah.
